Mission statement:
To advise the Town Council in the management and promotion of the unique cultural, historical and environmental aspects of the Mound House site. The Mound House property has laid witness to and contains eveidence of every major historical period in Florida over the last 2,000 years. The historic home and shell mound were purchased with $1,031,000 in grant funds from Florida Communities Trust.
Established in 1998, the purpose of the committee is to recommend actions concerning the Fort Myers Beach Cultural Museum and Environmental Learning Center to the Town Council. The Mound House is directed by Theresa Schober and Corbett Torrence, both professional archaeologists and educators who conducted the 2002 archaeological excavations on the property.
CELCAB continues to review options for the future of the center. In 2004 and 2005, primary goals have been to complete a preservation plan for the facility and chose a period of restoration for the main structure. In conjunction with this plan, restoration of the circa 1921 garage is underway to house an office, archival storage, archaeological laboratory, and accessible restrooms. In spring of 2005, the deteriorating swimming pool excavated into the shell mound in 1958 will be removed and large scale archaeological excavations will take place to convert the space into a walk-in shell mound exhibit. This exhibit project is supported by a $269,500 grant from the Division of Historical Resources.
